Thermal and mechanical resilience of solar cables in desert regions: Research results from the HIS laboratories

written byRebecca EtteSpecialist Article

The requirements for solar cables in desert regions are extreme: temperatures of over 60°C, intense UV radiation, sandstorms and strong temperature fluctuations between day and night place the highest demands on the materials used. In our laboratory studies, we have investigated how these extreme conditions affect the long-term durability of solar cables and which technical solutions offer optimum protection.

Challenges of the desert climate

The desert climate presents solar cables with a variety of challenges. During the day, the surface temperatures of the cables can rise to up to 80°C, while at night they drop to below 10°C. These cyclical temperature loads not only affect the cable material itself, but also the joints and insulation. In addition, sand particles cause continuous mechanical loads that act like sandpaper on the cable surfaces.

Research methodology and test procedures

In our laboratory tests, we simulated these conditions and even intensified them in order to determine the limits of the material's load-bearing capacity. The test series included

  • Thermal endurance tests at 80°C over 10,000 hours

  • Cyclic temperature cycling tests between -20°C and +80°C

  • Combined UV and sandblasting tests

  • Mechanical stress tests under the influence of temperature

  • Long-term insulation resistance measurements under extreme conditions

Key findings

The research results clearly show that the quality of the compound is crucial for long-term durability. Our optimized material formulation for desert regions achieves a proven service life of over 25 years under extreme conditions. The key lies in the perfect balance between UV stability, thermal resilience and mechanical resistance.

Particularly interesting: the combination of high temperatures and mechanical stress from sand proved to be the most critical factor. Conventional cable compounds showed the first signs of fatigue after just a few years. Our specially developed desert compound, on the other hand, showed no significant material changes even after accelerated ageing tests.

Practical implications

These findings have a direct impact on the planning and implementation of solar projects in desert regions. The use of specially developed cable compounds pays off:

  • Significantly longer maintenance intervals

  • Minimized risk of failure due to material-related defects

  • Reduced lifecycle costs due to longer service life

  • Higher system availability due to improved reliability

Innovation through continuous research

Our research work is ongoing. Current developments focus on the further optimization of temperature resistance and the integration of self-cleaning surface properties. We use state-of-the-art analysis methods such as 3D microscopy and thermography to gain an even better understanding of material behavior.

Conclusion

The research results from our laboratories confirm this: With the right material and the appropriate technical expertise, even the extreme requirements of desert climates can be safely mastered. Investing in high-quality, specially developed cable compounds pays off many times over thanks to increased reliability and a longer service life.
