Two-location strategy at HIK (today HIS Technology) – Success factor for competitiveness and growth
Since 2019, HIK has been pursuing a two-location strategy, which has not only emerged from strategic considerations but also as a response to developments in the industry. A necessary decision to meet the growing demands of the market and at the same time ensure long-term competitiveness.
The dynamic development in the industry and the increasing expectations of customers make it necessary for companies to be able to react flexibly to changes. With a second location and the associated advantages, it can be ensured that customers continue to be supplied with all desired products at competitive prices. This flexibility enables a significant increase in delivery capability and production capacities, as well as a quick response to individual requirements.
A central element of the two-site strategy is the mirror function of the two locations. Whether in Germany or Bosnia - all machinery, processes, and certifications (e.g. DIN ISO 9001) are identical. This standardization guarantees not only a consistently high quality of products but also a quick relocation of production if necessary. This way, HIK is able to efficiently respond to market needs and flexibly adjust production capacities.

The HIK cleverly leverages the strengths of both locations. In Oberzent (Germany), the focus is on engineering and the development of complex products that arise from engineering expertise and precision. In Sanski Most (Bosnia), on the other hand, mainly mass-produced products are manufactured, which impress with efficient production and manual work with high precision. This combination of German engineering and flexible, cost-efficient production in Bosnia not only ensures the necessary flexibility but also the ability to offer products of high quality at competitive prices.
The choice of Sanski Most as the second location was not a coincidence. In the 1990s, many Bosnian war refugees fled to Germany, and numerous of these people found their place at HIK in Oberzent. Due to this existing connection and cultural exchange, Sanski Most was chosen as the ideal location for expansion. Another advantage: With a large number of Bosnian colleagues who speak German perfectly, smooth communication between the two locations is ensured - there is no language barrier.
The two-location strategy has proven to be a success story so far. It enables the realization of large projects even at short notice and allows for a quick response to the growing demand. Access to qualified professionals, who are becoming increasingly difficult to find in the German job market, is another important advantage. At the same time, the cultural and professional exchange between employees at both locations not only promotes the flow of knowledge but also contributes to the personal development of the employees.
HIK also continuously invests in local infrastructure and actively contributes to the creation of jobs in the region. This not only strengthens the local economy but also improves the social environment around the Sanski Most location.
